After a month of preparations, here we are, finally confirming one of the biggest events on the ACM calendar. The Annual Guest Lecture 2015 has been scheduled on 19th March, 2015. Thanks to the Association for Computing Machinery, which allowed us easy access to Dr. Biplav Srivastava, Senior Researcher and Master Inventor, IBM Research.

We know that most guest lectures end up being a tad bit boring and meaningless. Therefore, after scrounging through the list of available topics, we bring to you the one most useful and understandable. The title of the lecture is:

“Big, Open, Data and Semantics for a Real-World Application Near You”

In this talk, the speaker will demonstrate and discuss how large volumes of data (Big), made available publicly (Open), can be productively used with semantic web and analytical techniques to drive day-to-day applications.

What’s more? Dr. Srivastava would mainly focus on why Artificial intelligence can’t help us do mundane activities, like fighting diseases, commuting to work or reducing financial frauds. Under the segment titled “Call for Action – A Local Suggestion”, our speaker will use the talk’s principles for an initiative the students can undertake under guidance of faculty and external entities (e.g. govt – Data.gov.in and industry).

Yes! This is not just a guest lecture. You may walk out with a concrete and useful project in hand!

The segment would be taken up during the event itself. After discussions with the speaker, we have finalized “water pollution in Ganga” to be the local issue for the segment.

Requirements:

  • The event is open to all branches and batches.
  • All of you are requested to sign up for free on this link. This would let us know the approx audience size::  http://goo.gl/forms/c6imJCE4ev
  • Please bring a small notebook and pen. No pre requisite skills are required.

Other info:

  • The guest lecture won’t clash with any other workshop/event.
  • The total time span would be 90 minutes only.

Till then,

Keep learning stuff!
